Rev. Julius Evans Obituary


Rev. Julius Thomas Alphonso Evans Sr., born on May 4, 1932, in Walstonburg, North Carolina, departed from this life on November 30, 2023, in Hampton, Virginia. He was the cherished son of the late Leroy and Minerva Evans.

Rev. Evans graduated from Greene County Training School and later pursued his passion for theology, earning a degree from Boyce Bible College in 1998. He was ordained at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia, under the esteemed leadership of Bishop Dwight Riddick, Sr. Following his calling, he founded and faithfully led New Birth Baptist Church until his health declined. 

In addition to his spiritual endeavors, Rev. Evans contributed to his community as a retiree from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1993. His zest for life was evident in his hobbies, including grilling, traveling, enjoying baseball, and finding solace in the words of the Bible. 

Rev. Julius Thomas Alphonso Evans Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Minerva Evans, two sons, Julius Evans Jr., and Danny Butch Harris, as well as brothers Milton Evans, Frank Evans, Leroy Evans, and Jolly Evans. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Selone B. Evans, and children: Yvette Evans, Esther Evans-Gibbs, Billy Barnes (Elizabeth), Rudolph Evans, Deborah Anette Evans, Vanessa Battle (Ronald), Yvonne Robinson (Edward), and Lydell Tynes (Pearline). Additionally, he leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. 


Rev. Julius Thomas Alphonso Evans Sr. will be remembered not only for his spiritual leadership but also for his warmth, generosity, and dedication to family and community. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the principles he instilled. May he rest in eternal peace.
