Retired, Lt Colonel McArthur Fields Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lt. Col. McArthur “Mac” Fields Ret., who was called home on January 3rd, 2025 at the age of 82.  McArthur was born on March 1, 1942 in Sardis, Georgia and spent his youth in Savannah, Georgia. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, friend, and cherished member of our community.

Mac was known for his love for family, kindness, sense of humor, passion for his military service, his adoration for track and field, the Los Angeles Lakers, and his alma mater Tuskegee Institute (University). His most passionate extracurricular activity was his music. His love for music and performing was paramount. Mac was a self-taught musician who was proficient at the saxophone, keyboard, guitar, and trumpet, however, the instrument that touched so many was his voice. His angelic tenor voice has filled rooms and hearts from Georgia to Italy to Virginia and points in between.

Mac graduated valedictorian from Tompkins High School in Savannah, Georgia. He continued his education excellence at Tuskegee Institute (University) where he obtained his Bachelors degree and then proceeded to Troy University where he obtained his Masters Degree.

In 1966 he embarked on an amazing 27 year military career in which he achieved numerous accommodations including the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Clusters, Distinguished-Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, National Defensive Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Cluster, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with 1 Cluster, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 5 Clusters, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Mac was deeply committed to his community and providing opportunities to the youth which aligns with his proud long-time membership in the Les Hommes Civic and Social Club, the Tidewater Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. and his attendance at Morning Star Baptist Church. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Mac was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Rosa Lee Fields.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Arlethia Fields, daughter, Roberta Fields, son, Ian Fields, brothers Samuel and Dwight Fields, sisters, Constance Wade, Valerie Gordon, Mary Chisholm, as well as countless family, friends and colleagues who will remember him lovingly.

A celebration of Mac’s life will be held at a To Be Determined date and location. Updated information will be presented soon.
