Terry Anna Avent peacefully entered into eternal rest on January 19, 2026, at the age of 62, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, in Newport News, Virginia. Her departure has left an unfillable void in the lives of her family, friends, and community, but her legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
One of the most defining aspects of Terry’s life was her deep and unwavering love for the Lord. She lived with the love of God in her heart and embodied the commandment from Matthew 22:37-38: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life, and it shaped everything she did. No matter the challenge she faced, Terry said, “You don’t know where I’ve been and how He’s brought me out,” a reflection of her enduring optimism and trust in God’s plan. Terry devoted much of her life to her church family, contributing selflessly in many capacities. As a dedicated member of choirs, usher boards, and the singles ministries, Terry’s heart for ministry was evident in all she did.
Terry worked diligently throughout her life - including at a crab plant where she shucked crab meat, the Cannon camera factory, and at multiple childcare centers - where she was known for her incredible work ethic, loyalty, and dedication. Terry was also a loving and devoted caregiver to her family. Additionally, she was a master crocheter and beautifully handcrafted crochet dolls, blankets, and hats. Terry’s Creations were made each with love and brought comfort, warmth, and joy to all who received them.
Terry was preceded in death by Ethel Ricks Powell (great grandmother), David Avent, Sr. (grandfather), Anna Mae Avent (grandmother), Shirley Avent (mother), David Avent, Jr. (uncle), Irene Avent (aunt), Willie Lacy Avent (uncle), Ernest Lorenzo Avent (uncle), Ethel M. Edwards (aunt), and Denise Reaves (cousin).
She leaves behind her devoted brother, Myron Avent along with numerous cousins and friends who will continue to celebrate her life and the impact she made on their hearts. Among her surviving family members are Doris Avent (aunt), Michele Avent and Niya Waker (cousins), Darren, Charita, and Darren Jr. Avent (cousins), Dana, Charles, Charles Jr., and Dainien Hughes (cousins), Keesha and Gary Coke (cousins), and Shanda Reaves (cousin).
Terry’s spirit lives on through the many lives she touched.
It is the desire of the Avent family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
