Ms. Sorayal Johnson-Temple, mother of Ms. Ebony Johnson and Thomas Johnson, Jr., daughter of Mr. Willie and Mrs. Elsie Mitchell and a member of Ivy Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia, transitioned on Monday, July 13 , 2020 at her home in Hampton, Virginia.
Ms. Sorayal Angeletta Johnson-Temple was born September 5, 1962 in Rocky Mount North, Carolina. She initially attended primary grades at Walter Reed Elementary School in Newport News, but upon moving continued her education in Hampton City Schools. Sorayal graduated from Phoebus High School in 1980. She furthered her education at Christopher Newport University where she received a BS and Troy State University earning a Master of Science Degree.
Sorayal was employed as a Pretrial Case Manager in Hampton and Newport News. She had compassion for her clients and her desire was to make a difference in their lives. Sorayal grew up attending Faith Baptist Church under the tutelage of the late Rev. T.T. Brown, where she was baptized as a young child. While there, she was active as a youth usher and member of the youth choir. She later joined Ivy Baptist church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Kevin Swann.
Sorayal was preceded in death by her sister Kimberley M. Thorne. She leaves to cherish her memories two children, Ebony Johnson and Thomas Johnson, Jr., (Janette) of Hampton, VA, her biological father, Robert Thorne, Winston Salem, NC, mother and Bonus father, Elsie and Willie Mitchell, Hampton, VA, three brothers, James D. Mitchell (Marilyn) Clinton, MD, Paul L. Mitchell (Angela) Hampton, VA, Elijah E. Mitchell (Kaseal), Hampton, VA, four sisters, Cynthia J. Mitchell, New London, CT, Antoinette I. Laster Ocoee, FL, Alicia C. Palmer (Fredrick), Hampton, VA, Jenifer Sabb (Robert), Hampton Roads, VA, three grandchildren, Kameron, Kamari and Seriyah, several uncles and aunts, and a host of cousins and special friends.
Viewing for Ms. Johnson-Temple will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2020 at New Hope Baptist Church, 1415 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
Due to social distancing limitations, private services for the family will be held following the viewing at the church.
Interment will take place at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
Mask are required for admittance into the public viewing or private services.
