Ms. Monique Mouton Obituary

Ms. Monique Cherie Mouton, beloved sister, aunt, cousin, and friend peacefully transitioned to her eternal rest on Sunday, July 5, 2026 surrounded by family and friends.

Monique was born on July 22, 1961 in Hampton, Virginia to the late Wilford James Mouton, Sr. and Ruth Goode Mouton. Following the model of her parents’ faith in Christ, Monique accepted the Lord in her youth, attending Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton with her family, where she participated in Jr. Choir and various programs held by the Young People‘s Department.

Monique showed great intellectual ability even from an early age. She had a variety of interests like playing the piano and violin, as well as playing softball, basketball, and even football in the neighborhood. She was able to skip a grade in elementary school, allowing her to graduate from Bethel High School in 1978 at the young age of 16. Although she initially thought about following in her parents’ footsteps to become a teacher, Monique was encouraged by one of her former Sunday school teachers, Mary Jackson (who would later become known as one of the famous Hidden Figures) to pursue a degree in engineering, because of the gift she showed for understanding higher level mathematical concepts.

She matriculated to Howard University where she forged life long friendships and made many fond memories living in Meridian Hill Hall. She graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1984, after spending an additional two years at Howard as part of a co-op

gaining work experience with the U.S. Navy. This opened a door for employment with Norfolk Naval Base, where she worked until taking a position at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. This position took her to many countries and on many stealthy adventures that she faithfully kept classified.

In Georgia she developed a community of friends she adopted as family, as she never met a stranger and to know Monique was to love her! She leaves a legacy of a deep and abiding love for theLord, who she later came to call “Yeshua” . She was a long time congregant of Beth Yeshua International in Macon, Georgia and more recently worshiped with Congregation Zion Sake, in Newport News, Virginia. She previously served as the Coordinator of Shabbat School at Beth Yeshua, because she loved young people and nothing gave her more joy than to share her depth of wisdom with them that came from her many life experiences. More than anything else she loved sharing her knowledge of the scriptures and was always down for a good debate over its interpretation.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Wilford James Mouton, Sr. and Ruth Goode Mouton, as well as a beloved nephew: James E.‘J Roc  Tucker III. Surviving are: her sister Yvette Mouton Runnels (Elliot), her brother Wilford Mouton, Jr. (Lynette), a loving nephew: Christian Mouton, her nieces: Elise and Giuliana Mouton, all of Hampton, and a host of other cherished family members and friends.

It is the Mouton and Runnels families desire that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
