Ms. Marleyne “Chomba” Marie Sanders, 53, passed away on January 12, 2025, in Newport News, VA. Born in Colón, Panama, on November 5, 1971, Marleyne made Newport News her home for over 40 years.
Chomba was the definition of real—big-hearted, always there for her people, and ready to give you the shirt off her back. She was proud of her Panamanian roots and loved her family fiercely, making sure everyone around her felt like they were part of her world.
She leaves behind her children: Johanna, David (Jada), Frankie (Sunny), and Annastazhia; her grandbabies: Amor, Kason, Charles, Jeremiah, Ahmad, Christian, Jace, and Autumn; and her siblings: Roberto, Ricardo, L’Tanya (Craig), Yvette Mickens, and other brothers. Marleyne was also loved by her adoptive parents, the late Ricardo Johnson and Brenda Johnson, as well as her aunts and uncle: Antonia Jones, Wilfred Johnson, Emilia Eaton, and Anita Johnson.
She’s preceded in death by her parents, Virginia Johnson and Prince Taitt; her grandparents, Wilfred and Eleonora Johnson; her aunt, Olivia Rattley; her uncle, Victor Johnson; and her cousins, Rosita and Victoria Johnson.
A special thank you goes out to her aunt Anita Johnson, sister Yvette Mickens, and her friend Sharon Perrin for showing nothing but love and support for Marleyne during her illness.
Chomba’s passing leaves a huge gap in the hearts of all who knew her. Her love, laughter, and the way she cared for others will never be forgotten. She will always be remembered for the mark she left on the world and in the lives of her family, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rest easy, Chomba. You’ll always be loved and missed.
It is the desire of the Sanders family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
