On Sunday, March 29, 2025 Mae Ella Grant transitioned from life to eternal rest peacefully at her home surrounded by family.
Mae was born May 21,1934 in Rich Square, North Carolina to Jack and Luvenie Jefferson. Preceding her in death also was her husband James Archie Grant, five siblings: Jack Jr, Joe, Geneva Copper, Dorothy Ann Hicks, Teresa Johnson, and Lloyd Harris.
Mae attended public school system in Rich Square, North Carolina. Upon graduating, she met and married her beloved, James Archie Grant. They moved to Newark, New Jersey and later relocated to Hampton, Virginia where they started their family. Mae attended Little Zion Baptist Church and sung in the choir until she had to care for her ailing Mom. She was employed for many years with Martin and Richardson Crab Factory. She worked with the Hampton School System for a brief period as a cook in the cafeteria and later worked with the family at Grant’ s Barbecue Restaurant.
Mae was more than a mother. She was our Confidante, Cheerleader, Big Sis, Big Mama, Auntie and Grandma. She taught us the importance of Family, Love, Kindness, Compassion, and Perseverance.
To mourn her legacy and precious memories are her daughters, Ella Marie Lassiter, Shelby Hill, Schenecty, NY, Godson Steve Witherspoon (Janien), God daughter Jessie Mae Grant (Nathaniel), Grandson’s Brandon James Grant, Kenneth Hill, NY, Granddaughters Sylvia Washington, NY, Shileana Hill, NY, sister in law Germaine, Grant Temple Hills, MD, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
It is the desire of the Grant/Lassiter families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
