Ms. Lucille "Lucy" McPherson, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on April 8, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on February 17, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, Lucy brought warmth, strength, and grace to every room she entered.
She was born to Kenneth McPherson and Lillie Allen and was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her dear sister, Dolores Smith-Jones.
Though her passing was unexpected, we firmly believe Aunt Lucy left this world peacefully, embraced by the love of the Lord. Her deep relationship with God was evident in the way she lived—always with compassion, kindness, and unwavering faith. We take comfort in knowing that she is now in the presence of our Heavenly Father. We believe there was no pain, no fear—only peace—as she was gently carried home by the One she loved and who loved her most.
Lucy’s life was a reflection of divine purpose and personal reinvention. Her professional journey began with IBM in New York, where she laid the foundation for a remarkable career in technology. In the 1980s, she transitioned to the Hampton Roads area and took on a role with NASA, continuing her work in the tech field.
In 1984, Lucy completed 2,000 hours at the Virginia School of Hair Design and received her Virginia state cosmetology license in 1985. After years of working in technology, Lucy followed her entrepreneurial heart and built a successful career as a hairstylist, serving her community with care and creativity.
She later earned her GED in 1999, proving once again that it’s never too late to pursue education and excellence. Lucy eventually returned to the tech world, working at Canon Inc, then joining the former Gateway company before her retirement. Yet, retirement was simply the beginning of new chapters.
In February 2007, her heart for helping others led her to complete the “For Children’s Sake of Virginia” foster parent training, as well as certification in the Concepts of Safe Crisis Management.
In February 2011, she proudly graduated as part of the first graduating class of the Advanced Cosmetology Institute and earned her Master Educator certificate in cosmetology that same year.
In 2015, Lucy fulfilled a long-held dream by earning her Associate of Applied Science degree in Human Services, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Thomas Nelson Community College. Lucy’s devotion extended beyond education and entrepreneurship—she was a devoted member of People of Purpose Life Changing Ministries. She poured herself into ministry with equal passion.
She was recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation by People of Purpose for her invaluable contributions. She had a deep love for the Blood of Jesus and Holy Communion, and she inspired others not only to believe in the Word—but to live it and teach it.
She also had a profound love for music—especially the bass guitar. For Lucy, playing wasn’t just a hobby—it was an act of worship. As a faithful member of a gospel quartet, she used her gift to glorify God and bring joy to others. Every note she played was Spirit-filled, connecting her deeply with the Lord and those around her.
To those closest to her, Lucy wasn’t just a mother—she was Auntie Mom. She stood as a guiding light in the family, instrumental in decisions and life moments that mattered most. Her counsel carried weight, not through force, but through the undeniable grace of God that was in everything she said and did. Whether through a quiet word of wisdom, a comforting presence, or a strong yet gentle nudge in the right direction, Aunt Lucy shaped lives. She led with love, moved with purpose, and left everyone better than she found them. For that, we thank God for her—again and again.
Lucy leaves behind a legacy rooted in love, faith, and family. She is survived by her devoted son, Eric Allen (Ingrid), who was her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. She also leaves her Godson, Walter Smith (Belissa), and her Goddaughter, Tamiyah McClary, both of whom held special places in her heart. Her memory lives on through her nephew, Dennis Allen; sisters Fredrica Holliday and Thelma Herring; and her brother, Albert Allen.
Her heart overflowed with pride for her three beautiful grandchildren—Brandon, Ericka, and Lauren—whom she loved beyond words and prayed over without ceasing. In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind a host of other relatives and dear friends.
It is the desire of the Allen/McPherson families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
