Ms. Karen M. Nixon was born on December 14, 1957 to Alice M. Nixon and the late Lewis I. Nixon in Boston, Massachusetts. Karen was christened at St Marks Congregational Church in Roxbury, MA on May 11, 1958 by Rev. Laviscount, where she grew up attending Sunday School and Youth Fellowship alongside family members. Karen was a woman of faith. She enjoyed attending Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple in Hampton, VA. She often accompanied her mother at her church - Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Newport News, Virginia.
Karen attended Boston public schools growing up and graduated from Natick High School as a METCO student, which is the country’s largest voluntary integration (bussing) program. And went on to attend Northwestern University in Boston, MA.
Karen then graduated from the Boston Police Academy, Class of April 1979. Karen joined the Police Force at a time when Boston was under court order to include minorities. Karen was a pioneer, a “cop with a heart” and a force to be reckoned with. She enjoyed a lifelong relationship with her mentor, the legendary Deputy Superintendent Billy Celester. She was a proud & active member of MAAP (Massachusetts Afro-American Police) which later became MAMLEO (Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement). Those friendships lasted a lifetime.
Karen was an avid lover of music, especially the timeless sounds of old-school classics and the smooth rhythms of jazz. She found joy in the simple pleasure of playing cards and was a proud student of Black History, carrying a deep appreciation for the richness of her heritage. And in the quiet reflections of her spirit, she was always drawn to the color blue, her favorite.
Karen loved her mother with all her heart. When you saw one you saw the other - bound by an unshakable bond.
Karen spent her final days wrapped in the love of devoted friends and family, her mother tenderly by her side. She was admitted to Hospice at Sentara Hampton Careplex on November 27, 2025. She departed this world with grace and peace, gaining her wings on November 28, 2025, surrounded by the love that sustained her throughout her life.
Karen leaves behind a deeply devoted mother, Alice M. Nixon, as well as a vast circle of cousins and lifelong friends who will hold her memory close to their hearts.
It is the desire of the Nixon family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
