Our dear beloved Joan Beatrice Smith, 76, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on April 7th, 2022 after a spontaneous hemorrhagic stroke. Joan was born on May 20th, 1945 to Louise Nazareth and Pernell Smith in Newport News, Virginia.
Joan attended George Washington Carver high school. After graduation, she worked at her best friend's store, Leon's Market for over 20 years. At Leon's Market, Joan held many managerial responsibilities such as bookkeeping, item replenishment, and operation of cash register. Her last employment was at the Newport News public schools where she retired.
In March of 1959, Joan gave birth to Carolyn Smith - her first and only child. Carolyn moved to New York and met Joel Porter, whom she once married. They gave birth to Noni Porter and Kyri Porter, who are the grandchildren of Joan Smith.
Joan spent a lot of time with her family and friends, and within the church. Her favorite hobbies were playing cards games, and computer games. She was a very sociable and physically active individual who loved laughing, joking, and dancing.
She was a fun loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She was known for her charismatic character and her optimism. She was a truly giving person who always shared her resources and supported others when they struggled. She was a strong independent woman who stood up for what was right and righteous. She will be remembered for her great contributions to the happy moments and memories she made and shared with loved ones both living and deceased.
Joan was predeceased by her brother James Smith, William Nazareth, Elmer Lee Nazareth, and Carolyn Campbell. She is survived by Raymond and Randolph Smith, Mabel Smith Drew, Helen Bland, and Doris Nazareth.
Service will be held at Ivy Baptist Church on 50 Maple Ave, Newport News, Virgina on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022 at 11 A.M. viewing of her body will be from 9 A.M to 11 A.M. Feel free to bring flowers. Any donations to the family and church will be kindly accepted.
