Helen Margaret Chisholm, 88, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at home, surrounded by family. She was born on May 24, 1931 in New York, New York to the late Frederick and Susie Crawford. She received her early education from the New York City Public Schools after which she went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from Hunter College and a Master of Social Work from New York University. In addition, she completed coursework at Columbia University toward her Doctorate Degree in Education. Her lengthy career of over 30 years began with the Bureau of Child Welfare after graduation, and she later transferred to the NYC Board of Education as a social worker in the public school system. She was a devoted and dedicated member of Springfield Gardens Community Church, Springfield Gardens, NY, where she served as a member of the Senior Choir, the Trustee Board, Administrative Assistant and Church Clerk.
Once retired, she relocated to Hampton, Virginia to be near her daughter and granddaughter. It did not take long for her to become involved with her love of community service by joining the Hampton Branch of the National Association of University Women who honored her as Woman of The Year 2002-2003. She also volunteered with Peninsula Reads working to help adults improve their literary skills. After a short time, she became an active and faithful member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News, Virginia, She has served Carver with benevolence and dedication as a member of the Edith S. Bland Circle, the Senior Choir, The Trustee Board; and having participated in the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia Pilgrimage. She was also a volunteer at the William E. Ratley Road Ahead Center in Newport News.
Helen has always had a great love for traveling. She was fortunate to be able to live out her dream, having visited such places as Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, England, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, and at least 20 of the United States to name a few. She was also a history buff and avid reader and has donated over one hundred books to the Hampton and Newport News area libraries.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved and devoted daughter Valerie Culley of Carrollton, Virginia; granddaughter Tiara Culley of Hampton, Virginia; great-granddaughters Nakira, NaRiyah and Nylah of Hampton, Virginia; devoted caregiver Patricia Washington of Newport News, Virginia; and a host of cousins and friends.
Viewing will be at C. C. Carter Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday May 25, 2020.
A celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday May 26, 2020 at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, Virginia. Viewing will be at C. C. Carter Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday May 25, 2020.
