Ms. Gladys Nicholson Richardson, 90, a nearly lifelong resident of Hampton, Virginia, peacefully passed away on August 8, 2025, at the Hampton Health and Rehabilitation Center where she received her final comfort and care.
Born on September 16, 1934, In Littleton, Halifax County, NC to Dora and Jesse Nicholson, Gladys was one of nine children. She was preceded in death by her siblings Carrie (K.B.) Riggins, Jesse Nicholson, Fletcher Nicholson, Winston Nicholson, Joseph Nicholson, Betty Nicholson and Virginia Bethea.
Growing up in North Carolina, she attended Halifax County Schools. Gladys was baptized in North Carolina and later became a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Hampton, Va. Gladys met her husband, Harper Richardson, in North Carolina, where the union produced five beautiful children. Gladys then relocated to Newport News, VA for the remainder of her life. In her professional life, she worked at the Riverside Health Department, but her greatest joy came from being a devoted nanny to a family she held close to her heart. Her favorite passions was playing Bingo and cooking for family and friends.
Gladys is survived by her sister Dolores Brown of New Jersey; her daughters, Maglenda Browning (Deceased Allison) of Ft. Washington, MD, Elizabeth Belton (Jahi) and Judy Jones (Dwight) of Hampton, VA; two sons, Malik Ashidda (Aisha) of Capital Heights, MD and Alton Richardson of Washington, DC. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, James Braxton, Stacy Braxton, Timothy Braxton (Trina), Michelle Browning, Michael Browning, Lamont Richardson (Tiffany), Marcus Horton, Shameka Watson (Jeremiah) and Branden Foulkes; 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
Gladys lived a life devoted to Christ, her family and friends. She now rests in eternal peace, her legacy living on in all who knew and loved her.
