Ms. Doll Marie Shelton, known by most as “Rie” or “Marie”, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 7, 2021. She was born in Waverly, Va. On December 5, 1952 to the late Randolph and Effie Mae Bates.
Marie attended Waverly Public Schools and later relocated to Newport News, VA and furthered her education as a Nursing Assistant. Marie provided private companionship to the elderly. She also attended Thomas Nelson Community College. She was an active member of Zeta Amicae. Marie loved traveling and visiting her family. She was a generous giver and was loved by all who knew her. We love her and she will be sorely missed by all. Marie truly loved and scarified for her children, grandchildren and family. But most importantly, she gave her life to Christ.
Marie was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray Bates, Frederick, James and William Mason and Linwood Noel. Marie leaves to cherish her beautiful memories, her loving daughter Kim Debnam-Tatum (Eric) of Hampton, VA: one dear son, Antwine Shelton of Miami, Fl.: two devoted: one foster daughter, Danielle Johnson -Hurley (Michael) of Newport News, VA. Two devoted granddaughters, Keiara Dodson, of Alexandria, Va. and Kourtney Dodson-Hugle (Paris) of Newport News, VA. One grandson- Eric Tatum Jr. of Hampton, Va Four great-grandsons, Paris Jr., Malachi, Kourdell, & Desmond Hugle and one great-granddaughter, Nyla James. Three sisters: Petrola Wilkes, Dorothy Miller and Maxzine Mason. Two brothers: Michael Bates and Larry Jarvis. One niece who grew up in the home with her, Renita Boothe. Special friends: Robert Debnam and Kathy Ann Chase-Moore. Marie also leaves a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, foster grandchildren, cousins and friends.
Viewing for Ms. Shelton will be held from 1:00p.m. until 5:00p.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home.Inc.
Services for Ms. Shelton will be held noon Friday, January, 15, 2021 at New Hope Baptist Church 1415 Big Bethel Rd.. Hampton, VA by Pastor Steve Brown.
Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
