Ms. Barbara Ann Stanley, known to family and friends as Barb, was born October 28, 1956 in Newport News, VA. She was the youngest daughter of Mildred Stanley. Barbara received her education in the Newport News Public School System. She was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital and the Hampton Public School System, where she worked until she retired.
Barb always believed in living life to the fullest. She had a lively personality, and people enjoyed being around her. She touched so many lives. If you invited Barb to an event, she would be there. She loved a good party: birthdays, baby showers, cookouts; it did not matter, she would accept. You knew Barb was present because she was “The Life of the Party.” Barb never said No; she enjoyed helping her friends and family. During the holidays she would drive to the local food banks and help deliver food to others. She always made sure her family and friends had a turkey and a ham on Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, everything always stopped Monday through Friday, between the hours of 12:30 - 1:30, so that she could watch her longtime, favorite TV show, “The Young and The Restless.” Barb enjoyed playing bingo, a good card game, a winning slot machine, and the daily pick four. She also found joy in listening and dancing to good, ole time music.
In the year 2022, Barb made some changes in her life. She decided it was time to start serving God. Her footsteps led her back to her childhood church home, The United House of Prayer for All People. She started attending services regularly in Hampton and began to thrive. Most of the time, she did not come alone but would invite her friends to attend service with her. Barb joined the Queen Board and began participating in the G-Class program. She was a huge supporter of the Friday night Fish Fry where she would host a door prize and help deliver dinners to her friends. Barb enjoyed working the program and proudly wore her G-Class pin.
We will deeply miss Barb and all the joy and good times she brought to us. Although our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the time we shared and the many precious memories we hold dear. She would not want us to be sad; she would want us to celebrate the good times, and in her words, “shut the dice down.”
Barb leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved son, Michael Jo’van Stanley (Jay) of Newport News, VA, who stood by her and would not leave her side during her last days. Jay refused to give up and advocated for his mother’s healthcare until God called her home. He was the true love of her life. She also leaves her three sisters: Shirley Horton of Upper Marlboro, MD, Muriel Barner ( husband Lorenzo), and Deborah Stanley, both of Newport News, VA; two brothers: Charles Stanley (wife Felicia), and Steven Davis, both of Newport News, VA; one God-Daughter, Peggy Hampton of Newport News, VA; seven nieces: Lolita, Shannon, Sharmine, Stephanie, Madison, Tiffany, and Tanesha; seven nephews: Lorenzo II, Kevin, Keith, Renaldo, Quinza, Qwest, and Mason; eight great-nephews and three great nieces. Special friends: Vanessa, Plump, Tim, Rick, Eugene, a host of cousins, and friends.
