Mrs. Vivian A. Jones - Shanklin (76), passed away on May 5, 2018. Vivian was a graduate of Carver High School, Peninsula Business College, Norfolk State University and Thomas Nelson Community College. Vivian worked in areas of teaching, social services and childcare for most of her joyful life.
A Legacy of Joy, Kindness, Foregiveness, Friendship and Love
Vivian, affectionately known as Annette by her family and many dear friends, was blessed with an openly loving and caring personality that will always be in our heart and memories. Annette was gifted with an innate ability to bring out the positive aspects of people and their circumstances, which was inspired by her outlook of living each day with pure joyfulness, an open sense of humility, sincere smiles of happiness, and truly wanting the best for others. Annette's personality and character had a magical, yet deeply sincere way of helping people to feel comfortable and at ease, as her caring eyes, beautiful smile and warm manner of conversation was always encouraging to others in a way that helped them to feel better about themselves and their lives.
Annette made significant and countless sacrifices throughout her life to help family members, friends and unfamiliar friends - - almost no one was a stranger to her. Admittedly, some of us were concerned about Annettes's willingmess to be so open and trusting; however, we came to realize that she just had a big heart that was overflowing with love and forgiveness and it was all part of the special blessing instilled within her by God. Without question, she was truly her sister's and her brother's keeper.
Annette had a well-earned reputation for being an outstanding cook, as at social gatherings her specialty dishes, including cakes and pies would always lead to the first set of empty plates. Further, while wathing many hours of cooking shows, she would frequently begin talking to the TV, trying to tell the hosts what essential ingredients were missing from their meal preparations and she would then immediately begin describing various other approaches that could also be added. One of Annette's secret ingredients that she has shared over the years is that a meal must be prepared "with love".
Annette was the proud daughter and first-born of the late William Rufus and Della Louise Jones. She was also a deeply devoted mother of two sons, James Shanklin, Jr.(Wilmington, DE) and William S. Shanklin (Virginia). Annette was also a wonderful sister to her siblings, the late William R. Jones, Jr., Peggy J.Brown (Hampton, VA), Terry R. Jones (Raleigh, NC) and Tyrone S. Jones (King of Prussia, PA).
Also, left to cherish her memories are her former husband, James W. Shanklin, Sr (WIlmington, DE) and step-daughter, Monika Shanklin (Tampa, FL); a host of grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of friends who will also keep the spirit of Annette's joy, kindness, foregiveness, friendship and love in their hearts and prayers.
