On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, God called his child Virgie Wilds home. Virgie was born to the late Clee Isaac Smith and Almeta Pittman Smith on February 18, 1940 in Enfield, North Carolina.
Virgie grew up in a large close knit Christian family with eight (8) siblings. She was educated in Halifax County, North Carolina. She attended McDaniel Elementary and Inborden School where she played basketball all four years. Her father (Clee Isaac) and baby brother (Thurman) attended all her basketball games and not missing one. She graduated in 1958 and later attended Shaw University in Raleigh, NC.
Virgie married the late Edward Wilds on December 12, 1961 and they resided in Newport News, VA until God called them from labor to reward. Virgie was employed at Riverside Regional Hospital for 32 years (1965 – 1997) as a nurse in Pediatrics and then home healthcare until full retirement. She was baptized at an early age at Daniels Chapel Baptist Church, in Enfield, NC. She joined Second Baptist Church which later became Miracle Temple Baptist Church in Newport News where she was a very dedicated and active member. Virgie was a member to the following auxiliaries: Usher Board, Missionary, Golden Age and the Area Council Missionary.
Virgie was proceeded in death by her parents; Clee Isaac Smith, Almeta Pittman Smith, siblings; Clee Essie, Edison, Lawrence, Claudius, Lennion Smith, niece; Chandra Flanagan, nephews; Douglas and Darrell Pittman.
Virgie leaves to cherish two sisters; Irene McCall, Velma Williams, and one brother; Thurman Smith (Gladys), best friend; Shady Mae Clark, Nieces; Shirley Rowlett (Keith), Lawrencine Smith, Lezette Smith, Ann Webb, Vanessa Whitaker, Sharon Downey (Steve), Pamela Smith. Nephews; Dennis McCall (Rhonda), Dwayne McCall, Lawrence Smith Jr. (Mayra), Darnell Pittman (Shirley), Anthony Pittman (Michelle), Antoine Smith, Claudius Smith Jr. (Valerie), Tony Jones, Mitchell Smith (Bertha), Elton Smith (Ingrid) and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing for Mrs. Wilds will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday, April 19, 2021 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home.
Services for Mrs. Wilds will take place at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Miracle Temple Baptist Church, 617 32nd Street, Newport News, Virginia 23607 with Dr. Anthony Cooper presiding.
Entombment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
