Mrs. Sharon Odette Tunstall, born September 20, 1960, in Long Island, New York, peacefully departed this life on April 8, 2025. She was the beloved daughter of Sidney Lassiter and the late Bernice Lassiter, and the third of five children: Wanda, Sidney II, James, and Beverly.
Sharon spent her early childhood in New York before relocating to Virginia with her family. She attended Carver Elementary School and later Warwick High School, where she proudly played on the field hockey team, graduating in 1978. She went on to attend Norfolk State University—Behold the Green and Gold—where she began to cultivate her lifelong commitment to education and service.
In the late 1970s, Sharon met Olanda Tunstall, with whom she shared a deep and enduring love. Together, they welcomed their first child, Yolanda, in 1981, and were united in marriage on January 30, 1982. Their family grew with the births of their son, Olanda, in 1983, and daughter, Raeshawnda, in 1984.
Sharon began her professional journey with Newport News Parks and Recreation in the early 1990's. Soon after, her passion for children and education led her to Newport News Public Schools, where she served first as a reading specialist and later as a special education teacher assistant. Her dedication to her students touched countless lives throughout her 26-year career. Always committed to personal growth, Sharon earned her associate degree in early childhood education in 2001.
She retired in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and love for her students and community.
Sharon was preceded in death by her loving husband, Olanda Tunstall (2023), and her cherished daughter, Yolanda Tunstall (2017) and her loving mother Bernice Lassiter (2018).
She is survived by her devoted father, Sidney Lassiter; her children, Olanda and Raeshawnda; her grandchildren, Tacori, Aaron, Jabari, and Mekhi; her siblings, Wanda (Claude) Hewlin, Sidney II (Renee) Lassiter, James (Deborah) Lassiter, and Beverly; and a host of family, friends, and former students who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
