Sandra Diana Yancy-Smith, lovingly known as “Sandy,” age 73, of Newport News, made her peaceful transition on February 5, 2026, after a courageous battle with cervical cancer. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Dana Yancy-Smith; her cherished granddaughter, Kennedy Glenn; her son-in-law, Kevin Meissner; her sisters, Lillian Brown, Mary Yancy, Dorothy Madden, and Cookie Callahan; and her niece, Raven Brown-Bunch. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick Yancy and Mary Morton.
Born Sandra Diana Yancy to Frederick Yancy and Mary Morton, Sandy was raised in the suburbs of North Hills in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania where she grew up alongside her equally eclectic and loving sisters. From a young age, Sandy demonstrated wisdom beyond her years. She possessed a rare gift for compassion and understanding, becoming a trusted source of guidance and emotional support for family, friends, and all who crossed her path.
Sandy graduated from Upper Dublin High School before pursuing her lifelong calling in nursing. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy University. Nursing was not simply a profession for Sandy—it was her life’s purpose. She devoted her mind, body, and spirit to easing the pain of others, excelling in her field and earning numerous accolades and recognition throughout her distinguished career. Her work reflected her deep belief that true fulfillment comes through service and sacrifice. An avid collector of artwork and a lover of beauty, Sandy found joy in travel and in discovering emerging artists whose potential she believed in long before they became notable. Her eye for talent and her appreciation for the world’s creativity mirrored her own generous and visionary spirit.
Sandy was also a devoted and active member of her community, generously supporting charities dedicated to medical research, science, and the fight against AIDS, cancer, and poverty. She believed wholeheartedly that serving others was not a weakness, but a profound spiritual calling. Her faith in sacrifice, humility, and eternal purpose shaped the legacy she leaves behind. Only when true sacrifice and selfishness is shown are we humbled in the eyes of God.
Sandy’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of her family, as she was pivotal in shaping their path and nurturing their growth. Yet she would not wish for prolonged mourning. Instead, she would encourage her loved ones to honor her spirit through continued service, compassion, and dedication to others. Her legacy of love, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to humanity will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
