Ruby “Bumpsy” Mae Cox McMillan, the third of 11 siblings, was born in Bolivia, NC to the late Louie Wilbur Cox and Evelena Smith Cox. Ruby was formally educated in the Brunswick County Public Schools and was a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in her hometown.
Ruby married her husband of 66 years, David McMillan, and to this union they were blessed with six children. Later relocating to the Tidewater area (now Hampton Roads), Ruby was a devoted
homemaker. She later became a member of Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, VA. Ruby had an infectious and heartwarming smile that could lighten the darkest room. She was always
cheerful, thoughtful, and often praised by others for her sweet and gentle spirit. Ruby’s favorite pastimes included cleaning and maintaining her home, cooking, shopping, serving others, and enjoying a beautiful day on her porch. She had a passion for flowers and enjoyed beautifying er yard. Ruby was a graceful woman, exuding style and class.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her siblings: brothers, MSG Elbert Lee Cox,
Louie “Pete” Junior Cox, Charles Allen Cox; sisters, Eva Cox, Reatha Snell, and Eartha Lee Cox Randolph.
The beautiful memories of her life will forever be cherished by her wonderful and devoted husband; six
children: son, Rodney (Michael) McMillan (Patricia), daughter, Debra Lunsford, son, Andra McMillan
(Dollie), daughter, Monica Booker (Carl), daughter, Leatha Spradley (Raymond), and daughter, Sharee
McMillan; nine grandchildren: Erica Warden, Lavon Lunsford, Renonda McMillan, Jessika Johnson,
Jahmael McMillan, Kimiko Booker, Parris McMillan, Jhmari McMillan, and Sha’Moni McMillan; six great-
grandchildren: Jayden Johnson, Karter Dicks, Cameryn Lunsford, Maison McMillan, Khloe Dicks, and
Jayla Johnson; four siblings: brother Anthony Cox (Louvenia); sisters, Frances Richmond (Haywood),
Joyce Cox, and Beverly Coleman (Paul); sisters-in-law: Patsy Cox, Gloria Cox, Johnsie Mitchell, and Eva
Smith; three special sons, Russell “Squeaky” Myers, Hammel DeRosa, and John “Nick” DeRosa, a special
cousin, Carolyn Burrell; a goddaughter, Angel Hall; a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives
and friends.

A mother guides us for as long as we live, knowing we’ll see her once more. Mom was our guiding light,
and now she is our guiding star. And so, good night, our Ruby, until we meet again!
