On April 1, 2025, Ruby Austin Dabney Lawrence peacefully transitioned from labor to reward, surrounded by the love of her family. Ruby was born on July 13, 1936, in Lynch Station, Virginia, located in Campbell County, to the late Pete and Minnie Austin. She was raised in a loving and close-knit family and received her education through the Campbell County Public School system.
Ruby was a lifelong woman of faith. She grew up as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Lynch Station and later served faithfully as an usher at the Church of the Nazarenes for many years.
After relocating to Hampton Roads, Ruby was employed with Pentran Handi-Ride, where she worked diligently and retired after 20 years of dedicated service.
Ruby was first united in holy matrimony to Carroll Dabney, Sr. From this union, five children were born. She later married the late Charles Lawrence of Hampton, Virginia.
Ruby will always be remembered for her big heart, her radiant smile, and her ability to make everyone feel welcomed and loved. She had a passion for watching soap operas (“the stories”) and westerns, and she was always ready for a road trip—especially if it meant visiting family in Lynchburg.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Lawrence, and ten of her siblings.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory five devoted children: Sabina (Willie) of Newport News, VA; Carroll, Jr. (Karen) of Hampton, VA; Jeffrey (Sharon) of Hampton, VA; Donna of Hampton, VA; and Terry (Denise) of Newport News, VA; one loving brother, Samuel Austin (Ella) of Lynchburg, VA; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
It is the desire of the Dabney/ Lawrence families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
The family of Mrs. Ruby Dabney Lawrence has entrusted her final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home.
