Mrs. Peggy Ruth (Koonce) Burley, passed away peacefully at her earthly home and entered her heavenly home on Monday, May 11, 2026. She was born on October 4, 1945 in Farmville, NC to
the late Paul and Maggie (Waller) Koonce. Peggy was educated in the Newport News, VA Public School System where she attended Carver High School. She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Curtis N. Burley. Unto this union, they were blessed with four children, Kim, Lamonte, Rodney, and Stacey.
Peggy worked for Hampton City Schools and retired after 31 years of dedicated service. She returned as a bus attendant and worked an additional 23 years. Peggy was a dedicated and faithful servant of God. She served fervently under the leadership and guidance of her nephew, Dr. Christopher C. Carter and niece, Elder Anita Burley Carter at New Hope Baptist Church, Hampton, VA as a member of the Missionary Ministry.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Maggie Koonce, her husband, Curtis N. Burley; one sister, Mildred Koonce Gullage; and four brothers, Leroy (Billy), Marion, Michael, and Anthony Koonce.
Left to cherish their memories of her are four children, Kim M. Gwaltney of Waldorf, MD, Curtis L. Burley (Eileen) and Rodney D. Burley (Donna) of Newport News, VA, and Stacey D. Irby (Charles) of Hyattsville, MD; 10 grandchildren, Rashad, Christopher, Kristen, Brandon, Aaron, Alana, Tyler, Cadance, Serenity, and Xavier; four great-grandchildren, Cameron, Hailey, Carson, and Charlie; one sister, Deloris Williams of Brandywine, MD; two brothers-in-law, Alvenia Ray Burley of Newport News, VA; and Leonard Gullage, Sr. (widower of Mildred) of Manassas, VA; three sisters–in-law, Annie Koonce (widow of Leroy) of Winterville, NC, Guinelle Koonce (widow of Michael) of Suffolk, VA, Paula Koonce (widow of Anthony) of Clarksburg, MD; one aunt, Margaret Ann Waller of Farmville, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends
