Mrs. Myrtle Hemphill Obituary

Mrs. Myrtle A. Hemphill, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2020, at Emory Midtown Hospital (formerly Crawford Long Hospital) in Atlanta, Ga.  Born April 11, 1941, in West, Texas, to the late James T. and Johnnie B. Walker (Sullivan). She graduated from Paul Quinn College in Waco, TX and completed her graduate studies at Rider University in Lawrence Township, NJ.

Myrtle was married to Bloy L. Hemphill on December 17, 1960 and traveled the world as a military spouse.  She lived in Hampton, VA and served as a member of Canaan Baptist Church (formerly Lincoln Park Baptist Church) for over 40 years.  She was a professional educator /counselor serving each community she lived.  Myrtle touched and impacted the lives of so many and was proud to be the perfect example of a “surrogate” mother for military soldiers across the United States and abroad.

Myrtle truly lived her life to the fullest through simple pleasures; serving as the chairperson for the Christian Board of Education, honorary member of the Gleaners, attending noonday and Wednesday bible study, cooking, flowering, traveling and chatting with family and friends.  She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way.  She is survived by her husband, Bloy; a sister, Linda Walker-Gaither; Son, Kevin L. Hemphill (Sonia); daughter, Dr. Suzanne Hemphill-Dickson (Anthony), adopted daughters, Tonya Walker Tandy (Donteses), Antoinette Gilliam, Annette Gilliam and Martina Smith-Jones (Marvin); grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
