Mrs. Mildred Pitts, age 98, of Hampton, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on April 7, 2026, in the comfort of her home surrounded by love. She was born on June 27, 1927, in Painter, Virginia, to the late Daniel and Anna Hayes. Mildred was raised on the Eastern Shore and attended school in Accomack County, graduating from Mary N. Smith High School. Mildred was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to her family. She worked for many years as a field worker and in the seafood industry, where she picked crabs until her health no longer allowed her to continue. She carried herself with resilience, grace, and determination throughout her life. She was united in marriage to the late Gilbert Pitts, and together they built a loving family. From this union came two sons, Lorenzo “Nookie” Pitts and Quintius “Quint” Pitts. In addition, Mildred and Gilbert lovingly raised three other children as their own: William, Leroy and Estella.
A woman of deep faith, Mildred gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She was a devoted member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she worshiped faithfully for many years until declining health prevented her attendance. Later in life, she relocated to Hampton, Virginia, to live with her son Quintius, whose loving care helped maintain her health and quality of life.
Mildred found joy in life’s simple blessings. She loved cooking just as much as she loved eating, and anyone who knew her could tell you that her homemade yeast rolls were unmatched. Her kitchen was often filled with warmth, delicious aromas, and the love she poured into every meal.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her eight siblings and three of her children.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted son, Quintius Pitts, and daughter, Estella; her grandchildren, Angelina Pitts-Lowery (Dwayne), Celestina Pitts, Weston Bailey, Christopher Weatherly, Jason Lee, Quincina Neal, Lorenzo Weatherly, Lorenzo Bailey, Rodney Weatherly (Catina), Melissa Bailey; eight great-grandchildren; more than a dozen great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mildred’s long life was a testimony of faith, perseverance, love, and family devotion. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
It is the desire of the Pitts family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
