Mrs. Mildred Hines

Mildred Verna Hines was born on February 17, 1936, in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Her mother was Carlilly Scott, and her father was William Robert Moore. She was lovingly raised by her grandmother Eliza Moore, who provided her with a solid foundation of faith and family values. At an early age, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, where her life's journey would unfold in ways she never imagined. Her grandmother believed this move was best for her future. In 1956, Mildred met the love of her life, Claude Hines Sr., who often said he knew immediately she was the one. Four months later, on August 25, 1956, they married and shared 25 beautiful years together.

A DIVINE CALLING

Mildred's life was forever changed in October 1958 when God visited her bedroom and told her to "follow me." Though her husband initially dismissed her experience, she knew she had to be in church that Sunday morning. She reconnected with an old school friend who attended a Pentecostal church, the kind of folk she had once ridiculed.

That Sunday morning, God met her at the altar. She described stepping over people, rolling all over the place—"Yes, I am a holy roller," she would proudly say. She joined Unity Temple Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, New York, and was never the same. She became spiritually intoxicated every Sunday. Following her move to Hampton, Virginia, she became a member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ where she served faithfully. In her later years, she became a member of Progressive Life Worship and Training Center, followed by Little Zion Baptist Church.

A LIFE OF SERVICE

Affectionately known as "Mother Hines," she had a nurturing love for children and everyone she encountered. During her employment at Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind and Multi-Disabled at Hampton (VSDBM-H), colleagues called her "Mother Hines" or "Sister." She was known for her gentle spirit, but if you did not want the truth, you better not ask her. She would say, "Life is too short to sugar coat anything."

Mother Hines was anointed, and a great prayer warrior. She kept a prayer list in her pillowcase and would pray throughout the night for each name.

CHURCH MINISTRY

Mildred Hines served faithfully in many capacities: Vice President of the Usher Board; Treasurer of the Gospel Chorus; Sunday School Teacher; Superintendent of Sunday School; Pulpit Aid; Helper with beautification and keeping the church clean.

Brothers-in-Law: Clarence Bowser, Bobby Bowser (Cynthia)

Sisters-in-Law: Ann McKoy, Stella Bowser, Ella Bowser, Bessie Bowser

Godsons: Kevin Howard, Sr. (who affectionately called her "Mommy"), David Carter, Chris Gray, Ezzard (EC) Luke

Goddaughters: Angelia Carter, Cynthia Lynn, Ernestina Lynn Carter, Tonya Grier, Latosha Jackson

Special Friend: Van Wallace

Devoted Caregiver: Jazanaye Moody

Extended Family: A host of great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends    

Mildred Hines touched countless lives with her faith, prayers, and unconditional love. Her legacy of service and devotion to God will continue to inspire all. 

It is the desire of the Hines family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
