Mrs. Marie Shipman Clinton Obituary

Mrs. Marie Shipman Clinton, the daughter of the late James Shipman and the late Mamie Harrington, was born in St. Pauls, NC on August 27, 1924. Marie grew up in NC and upon graduation from St. Pauls High school relocated to Newport News, VA where she met and married the late James Lee Clinton in 1944.  From this union a house full of daughters were born.

Following James’ untimely death in 1964, Marie found herself a single mother.  With her faith in God and the support of her family she dedicated her life to raising her daughters, sometimes working two or three jobs at a time. Marie was a very loving and supportive mother ALWAYS putting her children’s welfare before her own. She instilled in them the importance of hard work, dedication and most importantly the need to live a life built on faith in God.  With her children in tow, it was a normal occurrence to see Marie heading to Zion Baptist Church in Newport News, VA to attend Sunday services.

With hard work, Marie purchased a home in Hampton VA and moved her family there in 1971.  She worked in the Hampton School system until her retirement in 2001. Marie was a longtime, dedicated member at Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton, VA where she ushered until she stepped down in 2013. She was also a member of the Tidewater usher board. Her favorite song was “Make The Work That I’ve Done Speak For Me”.

Marie was preceded in death by her daughter Clara (Debbie) Clinton. She leaves behind her daughters Gloria Clinton, Sherrell Fitzgerald, Celia Laney (Rodney), Evonne Clinton-Carr (John), and Windy Randall (Arno), 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brothers Rudolph, Talvern, James (Ed) and Jerry and sisters, Mary, Margaret, Martha, Francis, and Lillian. She leaves behind two brothers Joe Shipman (Fannie) and J.D. Shipman (Betty) to cherish her memories. Marie was also preceded in death by close friends, Ola Mae Lyons and Nancy Shields and leaves to cherish her memories her best friend, Gonnie Blackwell.
