On Thursday, March 6, 2025, our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Flora E. Sutton Garrett, went home to be with the Lord. She was born to the late William and Georgia Sutton on April 27, 1934 in Bertie County, NC. She was educated in the public schools of Franklin and Newport News, Virginia and graduated from George W. Carver High School on June 7, 1951.
On December 30, 1955 she married the late Rev. Dr. Joseph L. Garrett and from this union they raised five children. After furthering her education, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and began her career in nursing.
Mrs. Garrett-as she was respectfully called, lived a life of caring, not only in her spirit but in her profession. She worked as a nurse in Dixie Hospital, Whitaker Hospital and eventually retired from Riverside Hospital. After retirement she continued her caring nature by caring for her older sister while caring for her husband. She was a devoted family mom and neighborhood mom who loved to talk. She would start a conversation and you would have to start walking away to get out of the door. Her response would be “You can keep walking”.
She loved church and loved singing. Not a day went by when she wasn’t singing around the house, singing the old hymns of the church like Blessed Assurance, We’ve Come This Far By Faith, and others. She also enjoyed the jazz music of Sarah Vaughn. She kept a song in her heart at all times.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; four siblings- Minnie, William, Clarence, and Dorothy; two nephews and a niece-Jimmy, Terry, and Gwendolyn; and her close friends Rev. Leman T. Boyd and Elizabeth Boyd.
She leaves to cherish her memory one sister – Blanche Whitaker (daughter Diane), a niece-Alison, a nephew-Kenneth (Gail), five children - Michael Lee Garrett, Charlene Garrett Travis (Reginald), Jacqueline Garrett Johnson, Carolyn Flora Garrett Warner (Michael), Yvonne Garrett Washington (David), 20 grand-children, 27 great-grands and a host of relatives and friends. While she was Mom to her five, she was affectionately called Grandma FloJo by her 20 grandchildren (Mallory, Jordan, Marcus, Joselyn, Rachel, Terrence, Katrice, Michelle, Florence Irene, Larry, Jr., Cristina, Cindy, Jaclynette, Shekinah, Garrett, Chase, Terence, Sherhonda, Danita, Bernard) and great-grands. We will miss this beautiful person who meant so much to so many, but we will never forget the gentle lessons she taught with her loving and kind spirit. She will forever live in our hearts and thoughts.
