Edith Virginia Hawkins affectionately known as “Ms. Edie” was born on June 7th, 1932, in Liberty, North Carolina. Edith was the 3rd child born to parents Edward Hawkins and Mamie Benton Hawkins who preceded her in death. Edith relocated to Trenton New Jersey where she lived most of her life and raised her 7 children.
Edith was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Ransom and Bessie Jiles, one brother James Hawkins, two children son Danny Sailor, daughter Elaine Sailor, grandson Rodney Dewayne Sailor, one daughter-in-law Winifred Elaine Powell Sailor, two son-in-law’s Andre Bernard Avant and Roger McDonald.
Edith had a big heart, a loving spirit and a passion to serve others. Edith believed in caring for those who needed help. Edith was not only a loving Mother to her 7 children but many others within the community. Ms. Edie was a great cook and knew her way around a kitchen, she was known for her down-home meals, and often called upon to cook for special occasions. Edith also worked at Saint Francis Medical Center in Trenton NJ. Edith was loved by many and disliked by few; she will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
Edith is survived by three daughters Rosalyn Mann, Regina Avant and Carolyn McDonald, two sons Joseph Sailor and Carl Maurice Sailor, 14 Grandchildren, Danny Sailor Jr. Latoya Nicole Sailor, Tanesha Danielle Sailor, Hilbert Lyman Jr., Douglas Malike Shareef Fuller, Kevin Billups, Lamont Sailor, Juaria Land, Cilinte Potter, Breille Sailor, Rasheen Hill, Carl Sailor Jr., Rhamel Sailor, Jacqueline Hawkins. 28 Great Grandchildren, and many Great-great Grandchildren. Special Friends, Joe Jones, Bennett Johnson, Nellie McKinney, Juanita Edwards and Deborah James, Samuel Jennings, and Kenneth Hill.
On May 22nd, 2021, Edith relocated to Newport News Virginia to be with her daughters. Out of respect for Edith’s final wishes, No Funeral or Memorial services will be held.
It is the desire of the Hawkins/ Avant family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
