Mrs. Dorothy Greene Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Washington Greene, affectionately known as “Lady D,” was born on May 28, 1943, in Elizabeth City, Virginia, to the late Patrick Henry Washington and Bernice Parker. Her life was a living testimony of God’s grace, strength, and unfailing love.

She was educated in the Hampton public school system and graduated from Phenix High School in 1961. At an early age, Dorothy gave her life to Christ and remained faithful in her walk with Him all the days of her life.

On June 25, 1966, she was united in holy matrimony to Rev. Dr. William O. Greene, Jr. Their 60-year union was a shining example of love, faith, and commitment, rooted firmly in God.

As a devoted First Lady, Dorothy faithfully served at Spring Grove Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church. She was a dedicated teacher of Women’s Sunday School and a warm, welcoming presence to all. Her life reflected Christ, and she encouraged others to serve God wholeheartedly in spirit and in truth.

Dorothy served others faithfully as a Licensed Practical Nurse and neonatal specialist for 39 years at Dixie Hospital and Hampton General Hospital (now Sentara CarePlex Hospital). Her compassion and gentle care touched countless lives.

She fought courageously as a cancer warrior, standing firm in her faith. Through every challenge, she remained a beacon of strength, encouragement, and unwavering trust in God.

Dorothy was the beloved matriarch of her family—a loving mother, devoted wife, and cherished grandmother. She found joy in meaningful conversations, creative expression, and the simple blessings of life. Her love was constant, her wisdom was steady, and her faith was unshakable.

On March 30, 2026, the Lord called His faithful servant home. Though we grieve, we take comfort in knowing she now rests in eternal peace.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, Rev. Dr. William O. Greene, Jr.; her loving children, Sharron Greene and Rev. Dr. William O. Greene III; her daughter-in-law, Deborah Greene; her sisters, Rosetta Pritchard, Patricia Judkins, and Frances Sessoms; her granddaughter, DaNeska Brunson; her grand-goddaughter, Christian McDonald Smalls (Herman); her grand-godsons, Nicolas McDonald and the late Christopher McDonald; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

It is the desire of the Greene family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
