Mrs. Dorothy Kelley Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Smith was born September 13, 1934 in Tarboro, North Carolina to the late Laura Smith and George Knight. She grew up surrounded by faith and family values that guided her throughout her life.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kelley and together they shared many years of family and life’s journey. She also had two sisters Della Smith Pettaway and Ruth Gardner that preceded her.

Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her sister, Mildred Hughes and her beloved children: - George B. Knight (Inez)- William T. Knight (Frances)- Enretta Knight Dockery- Dorothy Knight Hussey (Dennis)- Clement L. Knight (Carlyn). Robin Gilda Kelley

Dorothy was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of relatives and friends who cherished her deeply.

She lived a life of faith, kindness, and perseverance. Dorothy found hoy in gardening, cooking, dancing, and long conversations with loved ones. She was known for her feisty spirit, quick wit, and the way she made every person feel special in her presence.

On September 15, 2025, Dorothy peacefully transitioned from this life. Her journey here was a shining example of love, faith, and family devotion. Though she is no longer with us, her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Her favorite saying was. "I believe I can fly," and those words will forever remind her family to rise above challenges with faith.

Dorothy Kelley lived her life the only way she knew how—unapologetically herself. She was not perfect, but she was real, and when you were in her presence, you felt it. She loved hard, she showed up when it mattered most, and she gave of herself in ways that left lasting marks on everyone who knew her.

Dorothy found joy in music that breathed life into people. Some of her favorite songs told you exactly who she was: Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye, Practice What You Preach by Barry White, California Love by Tupac, I Ain't Worried About Nothin' by French Montana, and the timeless I Believe / Can Fly and Step in the Name of Love. These songs were not just melodies to her-they were reflections of the way she moved through life: full of rhythm, energy, honesty, and soul.

If you ever needed someone to come through in the clutch, Dorothy was that person. If you were in jail, she would answer the phone. If you needed a place to stay, her door was open. If you wanted a meal, she would cook for you. She gave without hesitation, because that was her heart.

One of Dorothy's favorite sayings was, "Everything that look good ain't good." Those words carried wisdom far beyond the moment. She often used them to guide her loved ones— sometimes in warning, sometimes in humor-but always as truth. That phrase reminds us that life is not always what it appears, and it stays with those who heard her say it.

Dorothy was many things depending on the day you caught her-she might be cussing you out, dancing to her favorite song, smoking a cigarette on the porch, or sparking up a conversation with a stranger in the store. But no matter what, she was herself. She did not put on a mask to please people, and she did not care who was watching. She lived with a raw honesty that drew people, children, and even animals to her-because deep down, her spirit was pure, and her love was undeniable.

She taught us that the prettiest picture can hide the ugliest truths, and the ugliest moments can still carry love and beauty. Above all, she showed us that life is meant to be lived out loud, without apology, with love that does not quit.

Dorothy Kelley's legacy is not one of perfection, but of authenticity, strength, and love. To honor her, may we all carry a piece of her spirit: to be who we truly are, to love without fear, and to remember that” everything that look good ain't good”.

Beautifully submitted with love,  Monte Kelley
