Mrs. Doris Ann Washington, a dedicated and compassionate Licensed Practical Nurse, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 84. Born on November 5, 1940, in Elizabeth County (now Hampton), VA, she was a lifelong resident of the Hampton Roads area whose career and faith touched many lives.
Doris was a proud graduate of the Phenix High School. She answered her calling to care for others by attending nursing school and dedicating over 40 years to her profession. Her career included working at the historic Whitaker Memorial Hospital in downtown Newport News, serving the elderly in multiple nursing homes, and providing private home care. She concluded her long and distinguished career with the Veteran's Administration, retiring in 2003.
A woman of faith, Doris was a longtime member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Hampton before later joining Full Gospel Kingdom Church. Her commitment to her faith was a guiding force throughout her life.
Doris leaves a legacy of compassion and cherished memories for her surviving family, including her daughter, Camelia Gunn (husband, Jeffrey); her son, Richard Washington (wife, Aquanent); and her beloved grandson, Josiah Gunn, Sisters: Shirley Lee, Kathleen Spratley and Carolyn Watts; and a host of nieces and nephews.
