Mrs. Delois Harvey Obituary

Mrs. Delois Lacy Jones Harvey was born August 25, 1944 in Hampton, Virginia to the late Emma Carmichael Richardson.  She departed this life suddenly on January 11, 2021.

Delois was educated in the Hampton City Public Schools and was a graduate of the 1963 class of Phenix High School.  Delois went on to complete two years of college at Hampton Institute when she married the love of her life, Rev. Dr. Edward Harvey, Sr.  Delois and Edward met while she was in grade school and they remained dedicated to one another for the next 64 years while celebrating 56 of those years married.

Nonetheless, Delois had goals that she was determined to carry out. In 1976, Delois joined the United States Army.  PFC Harvey was given the job of joining the kitchen staff as one of  the cooks.  Now, if you knew Delois well, you knew that cooking was not her thing, and she would tell you, “I don’t like to cook, and I don’t try to cook!”  After her honorable discharge from the Army, she decided to go back to college where she received her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Arts degrees from Hampton University.   In 1981, she began her employment as a Speech Language Pathologist with Portsmouth Public Schools for six years before obtaining a position with Newport News Public Schools where she spent the rest of her career until retirement in 2011.

As a member of Queen Street Baptist Church Hampton, VA for 65 years, Delois served as a Deaconess, was a member of the Inspirational choir, and a member of the Baptist Young Women ministry.  Her love and dedication for her church and church family was insurmountable!

Also, Delois was extremely proud to be a member of the prestigious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. of the Hampton Alumnae Chapter.    She loved her chapter and adored her line              sisters with all her heart.

Delois is preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Emma Richardson;  her beloved guardians uncle and aunt, Andrew and Nora Jones; and her only sibling, her sister, Annie M. Collins.

To remember her precious memory is her devoted husband, Rev. Dr. Edward L. Harvey, Sr. of Hampton; two loving children, Edwina Harvey-Simmons of Hampton and CMSgt. Edward L. Harvey, Jr. (USAF, Ret.) (Rosalind) of Woodbridge, VA; two adored grandchildren, Jarren L. Harvey of Woodbridge, VA and Ronni-Michelle Harris of Hampton; a loving mother-in-law, Queen Esther Haywood, loving sisters and brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
