Mrs. Dale Porter-Battle, transitioned into eternal life on Friday, March 7, 2025, with her family by her side. She was born in Newport News, Virginia at Whittaker Memorial Hospital (now a Historic Landmark) on July 5, 1953, to the late Alice Robinson-Cheeseman and Edward Brooks. She graduated from Denbigh High School, Class of 1971, in Newport News, VA.
Dale’s Christian journey began early in life at Rising Sun Baptist Church in Lackey, Virginia, where she received salvation and was raised in faith under the loving guidance of her grandparents, Reverend & Mrs. James M. Robinson. At Rising Sun, she sang in the junior choir and participated in the Baptist Young People’s Union. Dale’s grandparents built a church next door to their home, where she attended Sunday School and taught herself how to play the piano. Music played a significant role in Dale's life—her love of singing began as a child, where she would use a bath towel and safety pins to make her own choir robe.
In addition to her musical talents, Dale had a deep love for reading, crossword puzzles, Western TV shows, and crocheting. She had a talent for event planning and preparing taxes. She served as a wedding coordinator for several family members. She enjoyed gardening and every year her home was surrounded by beautiful flower gardens.
In her young life, she was married to the late Melvin O. Porter, and unto this union, three children were born, Antone, Derek & Jasmine. After several years, she would reconnect with Jesse Battle Jr., her classmate, while singing in the choir at First Baptist Church Denbigh and later married. They enjoyed 17 years of wedded bliss, traveling, attending concerts and going to the beach.
Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she was always concerned about their well-being. She was well known for her love of family and her dedication to those she cherished. She placed a strong emphasis on financial freedom, the importance of education, and living independently. She taught them the value of family and that the key to peace is operating in simplicity.
Dale retired as an Administrative Generalist from Newport News Shipbuilding (A Division of Huntington Ingalls Industries) after 47 years of dedicated service. She was well known in her department for her hard work and warm presence. Overtime, she built many long-standing relationships with her team that sustained past retirement.
Dale was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memories with her husband of 17 years, Jesse Battle Jr.; two sons, Antone (Barika) and Derek; and a daughter, Jasmine (Aiyanne). She also leaves behind three daughters gained through marriage: Kesha (Alex), Heather (Travis), and Tiffany. Dale was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Natalie, Nadiyah, Nadira, Asia, Erin, Italia, Lauryn, Taylor, Travis Jr., Isaiah, and Layla. Her grandpup, Mellow, also held a special place in her heart. Dale is survived by her sister, Mary Cheeseman-Graham (Timothy); three brothers, Nelson Cheeseman Sr. (Brenda), Vincent Cheeseman, Victor Cheeseman; and siblings-in-love, Angela Cheeseman-Moore (Richard), A. Leon Cheeseman, Donnie Cheeseman (Lauty Alcant), Dwayne Cheeseman (Artonda), and Kenneth Cheeseman (Gwendolyn), along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice Robinson- Cheeseman and Edward Brooks; mother-in-law, Annie Lou Battle; two brothers, Harold Cheeseman and Thomas Cheeseman; and one sister, Deborah Cheeseman-Hawkes.
Dale will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her unwavering faith, infectious smile, and immense love for her family and friends will be remembered forever.
