A consummate professional who was respected in the community, she was involved in many service organizations. Her involvement efforts include serving as a consultant (Pro-Bono) with Hampton University, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Urban League, and the City of Hampton, to help formulate a proposal for presentation to Dr. William Harvey, President of Hampton University, for creation/inclusion to designate Hampton University's Historic District Park Service. This was a passion project for Bessie in creating a National Park Service dedication documenting Booker T. Washington’s historic story from beginning to end.
Bessie is preceded in death by her daughter Nasahenton Sanders.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved son Nathaniel Sherman of Augusta GA, brothers Henry Sherman Oklahoma City OK, and Anthony Sherman (Yvonne) Hampton VA, granddaughter Aurielle Allen, Hampton VA, her grandson Marquis G. N. Sanders, Newport News VA, great-grandchildren Achazia Allen, Russell Allen Jr, Malaya Sanders, and Roux Mae Allen, nieces Sharon Sherman, Pamela Sherman, and Nicole Sherman and a host of cousins, other relatives, and countless friends.
Bessie Sherman was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She brought light into every room. Her comedic timing was uncanny, in her pursuit of her passion as a comedian because she enjoyed making everyone around her laugh. She was a true shepherd for God’s people because she never met a stranger. Always an encouraging word, a big hugger, natural giver, and the mother to everyone. Our souls are at peace because we know she is making the angels laugh with her big smile and warm spirit.
It is the desire of the Sherman family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
The family of Mrs. Bessie Sherman has entrusted her final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
