On August 6, 2019, Bessie L. Marks answered her Heavenly Father’s call and passed peacefully, surrounded by loving family and friends. Bessie was born Sept. 21, 1935 to the late Robert and Mary Knight Pettaway in Tarboro, NC. She was a graduate of the 1953 class of Carver High School.
She was united in holy matrimony to Willie Marks Jr on Nov.13 1954 and 5 Childern were birthed: Sharon (Izell) Davis, Rhonda (Kim) Gainey, Anthony Marks, Debra Marks-Flanagan, Kevin (Paula) Marks. Bessie or Lynn to her husband and friends, retired from Hampton City Public Schools and upon retirement worked at Captain Kidds Child Care Center in Hampton. She had a passion for travel and adventure and frequently embarked on cruises, tours around the country and occasional off broadway and broadway shows. Her sense of adventure was unmatched
She was a faithful member of New Grafton Baptist Church for several decades and decided to find a church home closer after the passing of her husband. She found another church home, Antioch Baptist, where she enjoyed her Pastor and 1st Lady, the Phillipian Ministry and so much more.
She is predeceased by her parents; devoted husband; brothers James and Robert Jr; and sister Wanda. Cherishing memories of her are 5 children, sister Eula Wilson, brothers Rev. Jessie Pettaway, Johnny (Dorothy) Pettaway, Lorenzo Johnson, Vernon (Delores Hart) Pettaway, 6 Grandchildren, 10 Great-Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and traveling companion Claudette Dees.
A viewing for Mrs. Bessie L. Marks will be held from noon until 6:00 p.m Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at Antioch Baptist Church 1563 Old Buckroe Rd. Hampton, VA. by Dr. Raymond Lassiter.
Entombment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
