Mrs. Alice Arlene Alston Guthrie, age 80, entered into a peaceful rest at home, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in Newport News, VA. She was the only child born to Harold and Gladys Naomi Scott Alston in Montclair, NJ.
After completing her education in East Orange, NJ, Alice received her BS in Elementary Education from Hampton Institute and earned a Masters from Eastern Michigan University before receiving a certificate in Educational Technology from Michigan State University.
Alice taught Special Needs children and those who were physically handicapped for 35 years. After retiring and returning to Newport News, she continued teaching another 5 ½ years and retired again from the Newport News Public School System.
She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, and leaves to mourn, her husband of 60 years, James Guthrie; son Michael Guthrie (Bernette); three grandchildren: Mia Guthrie, Philip Guthrie, Jena Guthrie Fenton, and four great-grandchildren: Teigan, Myjah, Zaleya, and Zaiden; half-brothers: Harold (Taalib) Alston, Richard Alston, and Jesse Hall; sisters-in-law: Regina Guthrie, Robnette Guthrie, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Alice was a faithful member of World Victory Church and Life Center in Newport News, VA where she served as a deacon and director of the “Signs of Praise” (sign language ministry).
It is the desire of the Guthrie family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
