Mrs. Alice Marie Holley was born on July 14, 1944, in Bertie County, NC to the late Doris Holley-Riddick where she was humbly and lovingly raised. She attended Bertie Sr. High School and upon graduation, attended St. Augustine’s College, where she played basketball until deciding to focus on academics and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
She completed her student teaching in Enfield, NC where she went on to graduate with a B.A. in English Education and where she met Walter Brower, Sr. who would be her husband for 56 years. With the birth of their first son, Walter Jr., they moved to Hampton, VA and both began teaching. Walter Sr. taught at Lindsay Jr. High and Alice at Spratley Jr. High. Teaching French for several years, she moved into English, which was her pride and joy.
She would later earn a master’s degree in School Counseling and an endorsement in Education Leadership. Their 2nd son Cedric was born in 1978, and Alice would move out of the classroom and into school counseling. Her career spanned more than 40 years, retiring from Hampton City Schools. She would work as an assistant principal at Smithfield High School, director of school counseling in Isle of Wight Co., adjunct professor at St. Paul’s College and would retire again from Portsmouth Public Schools after teaching middle school English, being named Teacher of the Year and working as the middle school English coordinator. Even after retiring a 2nd time, she continued to work part-time supporting English instruction in Hampton City Schools. Alice H. Brower joined and worked as a leader at New Hope Baptist Church where she led the Senior Saints. All the while she worked tirelessly in a variety of capacities within Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Alice H. Brower leaves to mourn her passing, devoted husband Walter Brower, Sr., sons (Her boys) Dr. Walter Brower Jr. (Ramona) of Hampton and Cedric Brower of Williamsburg. Her pride and joy, grandchildren La’Teyah Brower and Kahleef Jimmison and great-grandson Chosen Legend Thomas. Sister Margaret Gene Perry and brother George Lee Perry and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and the many that she grew to love during her amazing life journey.
Alice Holley Brower was a vibrant soul, full of pride and dedication to the ones she loved. She will truly be missed!
