Mr. Willie Oscar Mitchell was born on June 13, 1931 in Wetumpka, AL to the late Oscar Mitchell and late Mattie Golden-Mitchell. He attended public school there and enlisted in the military at a young age. He retired from the military after 22 years.
Willie not only retired from the military, but also retired from teaching at the local vocational school as well as from Siemens. He was a man who believed in hard work and taking care of his family.
Willie was married to Ruth A. Jenkins and to this union was born eight children. Ruth and their son, Anthony K. Mitchell, preceded him in death.
Willie became a believer in Jesus Christ when he and his family joined the St. John Church of God in Christ. They were members for over 25 years. Although he sang in the choir, his real love was to usher and he did this with humble dignity. He was very friendly and always had a piece of peppermint candy in his pocket to give away when needed.
In 1993, Willie married Elsie Lee Brown from Hampton, VA. With this union, he gained two bonus children – Kimberly and Sorayal. Both daughters preceded him in death.
Willie was also preceded in death by his daughter-in-love Kaseal “Candy” Mitchell.
Willie and Elsie joined the Sweet Haven Holy Church of God in 2002. Willie worked tirelessly as the President of the Senior Choir, sang with the Men’s Chorus, helped wherever needed in the Men’s Department and also served as a Deacon.
Left to cherish his memories: His wife of 27 years – Elsie L. Mitchell, his sons: James (Maryland), Paul (Angela), Elijah; his daughters: Cynthia, Antoinette, Alicia (Frederick) and Jenifer (Robert). Also cherishing his memories are thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, while love leaves memories that no one can steal.
