Mr. Virgil Williams Sr., 85, of Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully on August 15th, 2025, surrounded by his family.
As a young man, Virgil gave his life to Christ. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Newport News, VA, where he served as a faithful trustee.
Virgil was born on May 4, 1940 in Oak City, NC. He was the son of late Lawrence Williams Sr. and the late Cora Lynch Williams. He graduated from West Martin High School and moved to Virginia where he began his professional career at what was then known as the Newport News Shipyard and Drydock company. Subsequent to his service at the Newport News Shipyard, he fulfilled his entrepreneurial passions as the owner of a dump truck company and a long distance tractor trailer company. He was also a sole-proprietor of a taxicab. Most notably, he loved all things cars and spent over 30 years building a successful car dealership before retiring in 2018.
Virgil was affectionately known by many nicknames such as Boot, Coon, Slim, and most notably, “Virginia Slim”. Virginia Slim was passionate and well-known across the nation for his professional race cars and grudge races. He raced in many circuits throughout Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina over the years. This was a passion he shared with his family, including his grandson Devin, who later became the driver of his race car, and his great granddaughter Jordyn Gabrielle Williams.
Virgil enjoyed playing cards at the senior centers, going to car races, and showcasing his 1952 Pontiac at the antique car rallies. He especially loved helping others. He was happiest loving on his family, which everyone he met ultimately became. He counseled, guided, and poured into all that were willing to receive from him and genuinely wanted the best for everyone around him. You only had to talk to him briefly to know what he was about, the man that he was, and how he carried himself. He was a blessing to all who had the privilege to know him.
Virgil is survived by his wife Priscilla Hughes Williams, brothers Lawrence Williams, Jr., and Douglas Jones “Lil Bro” (raised together by Douglas’ mother/Virgil’s oldest sister); sons, in birth order, James Callis, Virgil Williams Jr, Idris Devone (Tia), and; daughters, in birth order, Veronica Williams, Pamela Walker, Necole Allen (Desmond), and Lakisha Devone; grandchildren - Devin, John, the late James, Dion, Kim (Greg), Aaliyah, Idris Jr., Michelle, Barbara, Amir, Desmond, Cory, Kamaya, Dyson, Makayla, Paul, Alivia, Ainsley - and great-grandchildren - Jordyn, Deonte, Divine, Dream, and Kim Jr.
He also leaves behind to cherish his memory several bonus children, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and people whose lives he impacted through his character, his wisdom, and the testament of Christ that was his life.
It is the desire of the Williams family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
