Mr. Tommie L. Wheeler, Sr. peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Born on June 19, 1926, in Milan, Georgia, Tommie was raised in Forrest City, Florida, where he received his education at Hungerford High School.
At the young age of 16, Tommie answered the call to serve and joined the United States Navy. His dedication spanned over two decades, followed by an additional 25 years of service at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, Virginia. Fittingly, Yorktown was his first duty station—a place that would become deeply meaningful in his life. While stationed there, he met his beloved Hattie in Richmond, Virginia. Their union blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and together they were blessed with seven children.
He was proceeded in death, by his wife of 69 years, Hattie and his beloved grandson Lavar Pierce; however he leaves to treasure wonderful memories and his rabbit ears, his children Tommie Wheeler, Jr (Nancy) of Richmond, Va., Veronica Long (Cleon), of Newport News, Va., Deborah Wheeler of Philadelphia, Pa., Teresa Pierce of Newport News, Va., Gregory Wheeler of Newport News, Va., Cynthia Young (Michael) of Chesapeake, Va., and Denise Saddler (Michael) of Cordenons, Italy; 22 Grandchildren, 34 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren and two bonus daughters, Mazie Sellers (Robert) and Margot Everett.
Tommie will be deeply missed, but he leaves behind a legacy of his profound love for Christ, his adventurous spirit, and his enduring passion for reading.
