Mr. Roscoe Willie Mathis, affectionately known as “Buster” or “Crow,” transitioned peacefully on May 19, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on February 10, 1950, he was the third child of the late Virginia and Roscoe Mathis. He was raised in Newport News, Virginia, alongside his beloved siblings Geneva, Carolyn, Connie, Theodore, Alvina, and McCarthy.
A proud graduate of Washington Carver High School, Class of 1968, Roscoe went on to serve his country with honor as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Roscoe had many passions in life—he was an avid car enthusiast, a dedicated fisherman, and a lifelong student of agriculture. He was also known for his sharp eye and entrepreneurial spirit as a professional thrifter, which led him to open his own store, “The Crow’s Nest,” a reflection of his unique style and personality.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Alvina, Connie, Geneva, and Theodore. His memory lives on in the hearts of his children, Omar Montique, Nailah Threatt, and Mekyel Neil; his grandchildren, Amber Threatt and Caleel Montique; his siblings, Carolyn Mathis and McCarthy Mathis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Roscoe’s legacy is one of resilience, love, and individuality. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
