Mr. Ronnie B. Perry peacefully departed this life on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in the comfort of his beloved home.
Born on February 20, 1947, in Newport News, Virginia, Ronnie was the youngest of two children and the only son of the late Helen (Banks) Perry Corbin and James E. Perry Jr.,
Ronnie received his early education in the Newport News Public Schools and graduated from George W. Carver High School. He went on to attend Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Technology from Norfolk State University.
Ronnie began his professional career at Newport News Shipbuilding before joining the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Langley Air Force Base. There, he earned recognition for his innovative contributions to aerospace technology, including developments in explosive-actuated aircraft egress systems, steel foil blasting cap improvements, and explosive joining tubes. As part of the RSRA Piloted Aircraft Data Systems Team, Ronnie was honored with the Group Achievement Award for his work on the development and testing of four piloted aircraft systems. One of his proudest professional accomplishments was his contribution to the heat-resistant reentry tiles used on the U.S. Space Shuttle.
After a long and fulfilling tenure at NASA, Ronnie continued his career at Northrop Grumman, where he furthered his work in the aerospace industry until his retirement in 2015. He took great pride in his work and remained a dedicated technology professional until his health began to decline.
Ronnie was also a proud member of the prestigious Club 533, an organization founded in 1956 by a group of distinguished African American men committed to advancing the social and civic welfare of their communities. Club 533 has long been recognized for its legacy of excellence and distinguished membership.
Ronnie was full of life—his exuberant spirit, infectious smile, and love for people made him unforgettable. He had a passion for good music, good food, and great company—especially when all three came together. His vibrant social life included regular appearances at the CIAA and MEAC Tournaments, and homecomings at both Virginia State and Norfolk State Universities. He was a devoted fan of the Hampton Jazz Festival and D.C.’s Capital Jazz Fest. Known among friends for his dapper style, boyish charm, and magnetic presence, Ronnie took great pride in his appearance until the very end.
Above all, Ronnie loved his family deeply. He cherished his daughter and grandchildren, showering them with affection through warm hugs and heartfelt words. He held a special admiration for his son-in-law, often praising his unwavering dedication to family. He adored his mother and remained close to his sister and nephew throughout his life. His heart also belonged to his devoted companion of over 30 years, Ms. B, whom he lovingly referred to as his soulmate.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Helen (Banks) Perry Corbin and James E. Perry Jr.,
He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted daughter, Dr. Ronnette P. Ballard, and son-in-law, Dr. Reginald Ballard of Round Rock, Texas; two grandchildren, Sheldon A. Ballard and Shaelyn C. Ballard; his loving sister, Brenda (Perry) Wharton Taylor; nephew, William B. Wharton Jr.; his beloved companion, Belinda Holland-Hawkins (Ms. B); and a host of extended family members and dear friends.
It is the desire of the Perry/Ballard families that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
