In loving memory, Robert M. Clayton passed away on Sunday November 20, 2022. He was born in Newport News Virginia on October 19, 1964, to James and Elizabeth Clayton.
Robert grew up in the Aberdeen neighborhood of Hampton and graduated from Bethel High School where he played football and wrestled. He continued his education at the Newport News Apprenticeship School as a Machinist.
At the time of his untimely transition Robert was a Captain with the Newport News Sheriff Department. Captain Clayton joined the Newport News Sheriff Office in July 1998. He left briefly in 2004 to join the Newport News Fire Department. He returned in October 2006. This gentle giant of a man was committed to making a difference wherever he went. He twice received the NNSO Life Saving Medal. In 2007 he performed CPR to save an inmate. In 2008 while he waited to cast his ballot, he worked to save a man who collapsed in line.
He received the NNSO Outstanding Performance of Law Enforcement award for his work in Court Security in 2014. Hewas praised for his positive attitude dealing with public and co-workers, his patience, and his desire to help others. His hard work earned him the respect of his peers. Sheriff Morgan recognized his dedication with promotions that took him from the Jail to Court Security to Services Commander.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Willie Clayton. Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are his sister Mary, two brothers Charles Clayton (Wendy), and Dean Clayton and a host of nieces, nephews, family members, co-workers, and friends.
