Mr. Oscar Coppedge Obituary

Oscar McDonald Coppedge, of Newport News, VA, peacefully passed away at his home on June 17, 2019.  He was born August 1, 1946 to Oscar “Dee” Coppedge and Georgia Sumler Coppedge. 

 

Mack, as he was called, attended Newport News Public Schools and was a member of the Huntington High School Class of 1964.  Upon leaving high school, Mack joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country proudly during the Vietnam War.  He earned several service awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Vietnam Service Medal. 

 

As a child Mack had a natural talent in carpentry.  After being honorable discharged from the military he continued to develop those skills and received certifications in basic construction and electrical technology.  Mack was a loyal friend and confidant to many.  His smile could light up a room and his quick wit kept everyone on their toes.  On March 15, 2019 Mack accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in the name of Jesus. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Coppedge and his mother, Georgia Sumler Coppedge. 

 

He is leaves to cherish his life and memories, his brother, George (Audrey) Coppedge, of Hampton, VA; uncle, Luther (Christine) Coppedge of Raleigh, NC; nieces, Rita Coppedge of Newport News, VA, Angela (Antoine) Santiago of Hampton, VA; Vernessa (Thomas) Simmons of Charleston, SC; and Ericka Daniel of Houston, TX; nephews, Bryan Coppedge of Warrenton, NC; George Coppedge of Honolulu, HI, and Ricky Daniel of Defiance, OH; special cousin, Sylvester “Snip” Artis of Hampton, VA and a host of other cousins, great nieces, great  nephews, and friends.

 

A homecoming celebration will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Church of Jesus, 630 Anderson Lane, Hampton, VA  23661.  Inurnment with military honors will be held at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA at a later date.
