Mr. Nathaniel Ashe Jr., Obituary

Nathaniel Herman Ashe Jr. was born to the late Shirley Langston Ashe and Nathaniel Ashe Sr. on February 6, 1959, in Suffolk, VA. Nate, affectionately called "Junior" by family, was the middle child of the Ashe household. Despite his large stature and appetite, he was a gentle giant to his family. He was a hard worker, gaining his entrepreneurial spirit at an early age by working with his maternal grandfather and uncle. He was quick to quote his grandfather, saying, "No job is too small” and “Don't take a job you don't know how to do." With that in mind, he created and ran Above All Services for nearly 30 years until his health made him unable to sustain his business.

Nathaniel attended school in Bronx, NY, and Suffolk, VA. He was a 1977 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, where he excelled in art, winning numerous awards. He was doing a man's job at the early age of sixteen, until he had his left hand crushed in a freak accident. Although he missed months out of school for rehabilitation to learn how to write again, he still graduated with his class. He had his mind set on joining the US Army, but due to his injury, he was unable to enlist. Never looking at his hand as a disability, he moved to New York and attended the New York Institute of Technology. That is where he would meet his ex-spouse and the mother of his children. They would move back to the Tidewater area and reside in Hampton, VA, for over 30 years.

Nathaniel leaves to cherish the memory of his charm and humor, his ex-spouse Ai Choo Ashe, three children Nicholas (Shannon) Ashe of Mililani, HI, Keshia Ashe of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jonathan Ashe of Richmond, VA. He also leaves behind four siblings, Jackie (Jessie) Stencil of Suffolk, VA, Theresa Ashe Brooks of Hampton, VA, Andrew Ashe of Norfolk, VA, Darryl (Lillian) Gilliam of Staten Island, NY, Celeste Gilliam of Bronx, NY, and Christopher (Tonya) Ashe of Fort Lee, NJ. His most precious gift was his five grandchildren, Noah, David, Samuel, Aisley, and Ellis. He loved spending time with them and creating lasting memories of laughter and joy. Coming from a very large family, he leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

It is the desire of the Ashe family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
