Mr. Lloyd "BBQ" Hicks Jr.,

Mr. Lloyd “BBQ” Hicks Jr. departed on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was born December 14, 1967 in Franklin, Virginia to the late Irene M. Beale-Slade. BBQ graduated from Ferguson High School in 1988.

After graduation, he worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company for a short period. BBQ returned back to Ferguson HS and began working with the late Coach Teddy Bacote. This was the start of his journey in athletics with Newport News Public Schools and becoming the “Mayor” of the City of Newport News.

He worked under several Athletic Directors to include the late George Walters, Al Fleury, Benjamin Moore and Debbie Berry. The most recent were Dwayne Peters, Michael Gardner and Jamie Plecker. BBQ was dedicated to the students, staff at Heritage HS and the community.

From the classroom to stadium lights, from pep rallies to quiet moments with students who needed support, he made every person feel valued and seen. When not involved with school activities and events, he enjoyed watching his favorite NFL team, the Dallas Cowboys.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Irene Beale-Slade, father, Lloyd Hicks Sr. (LC), maternal grandmother, Myrtle Beale, maternal grandfather, Luther Beale Sr., and two aunts (Diane and Mildred Beale). He leaves to cherish his memory: five aunts, Emma Beale, Louise Rucker, Christine Beale-Stefanelli, Darlene Beale, all of Mufreesboro, N.C., and Mary Beale of Milwaukee, Wis.; one uncle, Luther Beale Jr. of Mufreesboro, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

It is the desire of the  Hicks family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The family of Mr. Lloyd  "BBQ" Hicks  has entrusted his final care to C. C. Carter Funeral Home.
