Mr. Leonard Robert James—beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend—departed this life on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Riverside Regional Hospital after a brief illness. His presence will be deeply missed. Known for his gift of conversation, Leonard loved to tell stories and jokes, bringing laughter and joy to those around him.
Affectionately called Boo, Stickman, and Lenny, Leonard was born on November 9, 1947, in Newport News, Virginia, to Freddie and Bernice James. A lifelong resident of Newport News, he graduated from Huntington High School with the Class of 1966. Leonard proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Throughout his career, Leonard worked at Newport News Shipyard, drove for the Richmond transit system, excelled as a salesperson at several local car dealerships, and later retired from Coca-Cola. In each role, he left behind a reputation for hard work, dedication, and genuine kindness.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Freddie and Bernice James; his sisters, Silva Denise James and “Baby” James. He is survived by his children, Shimere James Wyche (Brian) and Brent Leonard James; grandchildren, Brooke Wyche, Benjamin Wyche, Brian Wyche Jr., and Brianna Wyche; sisters, Cynthia James Windley and Andrea Lee James of Hampton, Virginia; nephews and niece, Bernie Hayes Jr., Bernie Hayes III, and Mya Brenay Hayes of Maryland; and a host of cousins and dear friends. Among his many close friends, the Whitlock family, Chyne, and Robert Harris held a special place in his heart—with gratitude extended to Mr. Harris for giving the family more cherished time with Leonard.
Leonard’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and laughter. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
