Johnnie Edward Dickerson (Key) suddenly departed this life “for a better one”, on October 26, 2023.
Johnnie was born on January 21, 1964, in Newport News, VA to the loving union of Johnny Barfield and Florence Dickerson. During his early years, Key attended Triumph Pentecostal Church of Deliverance. However, in his adulthood Johnnie accepted The Lord, Jesus Christ as his Savior and was a member of the Outreach Christian Center in Clinton, MD in the late nineties.
In 1984, Johnnie graduated from Menchville High School. His former high school friends and classmates would frequently stop at the fence, circling the house, to catch up, reminisce, and laugh about the good ole days. Key’s love for University of Virginia (UVA) football, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team was a consistent conversation among his family and friends.
Johnnie enjoyed music. Anywhere he sat, if there was music playing, he would tap his fingers. While traveling in the car, he would tap the armrest while listening to the radio. While standing in the door, he would tap the door frame. Key also enjoyed cooking, and would often tap the kitchen counter, while waiting for his french-fries to cook.
Key was kind, patient and friendly. As a teenager his welcoming attitude landed him a “Rent-a-Teen” commercial with his sister Veronica. Johnnie was a very dedicated employee of SMS for 20 years. As a supervisor, he stived for excellence. For many years he reported to work, an hour early, to get a head start on his day. Playing a significant role in minimizing the spread of COVID, Johnnie never stopped wearing his mask, even after the mandate ended.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his father Johnny Barfield, sisters Jacqueline Mitchell and Lopena Dickerson, Grandmother Irene Jones, nephew Devoris Dickerson and several first cousins. Left to cherish fond memories are his mother, Florence A. Dickerson of Newport News, VA; two sisters, Veronica A. Wright of Hampton, VA and Taunja Dickerson Ruffin (Deon) of Charlottesville, VA; three brothers, Larry Wayne Dickerson of Hampton, VA, Lynn R. Dickerson and Thomas E. Dickerson (Carolyn) from Newport News, VA; One aunt, Yvonne Cobbs of Newport News, VA; A special niece and nephew, Latonya Dickerson Hughes (Bernard) of Hampton, VA and Shawn Dickerson of Charlottesville, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The Dickerson family ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers at this time.
