Mr. John Eddie Gunter

John Eddie Gunter, 82, passed away peacefully Monday, November 16, 2020, at his home in Hampton, Virginia. He was born February 25, 1938, in Danville, Virginia, to the late Jessie and Scelester Gunter.

John was educated in the Danville school system. He relocated to Hampton, Virginia where he met and married the love of his life, Mary Gunter. They were blessed to spend 56 wonderful years together.  He worked for Wharton Construction Company before he went on to start his own trucking business, John E. Gunter General Hauling.  He was owner operator for over 20 years before retiring.

“Da” as he was affectionately known by his family, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. There wasn’t a day that went by that family was not around. He enjoyed tinkering on small appliances around the house, gardening, and spending time outdoors. He always made sure his family was taken care of. He may not have agreed with why you were in the situation you were in but he would do anything he could to help, but not without a few stern words of wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gunter and one daughter, Brenda Gilliam-Peele.  He leaves to cherish his memories three daughters, Belinda Gunter-Hart, Tonja Gunter-Futrell (Michael), and Joyce Knox (Bobby); four sons, Jessie Gunter, Joseph Gilliam (Donna), William Gilliam, and Marvin Gilliam; 25 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, one aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A public viewing will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at C. C. Carter Funeral Home located at 3314 Roanoke Avenue, Newport News, VA.

Mask are required for entry into C.C. Carter Funeral Home and Social Distancing practices will be followed.
