John Wesley Evans, Sr., affectionately known as “Shack,” age 84, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was born on January 14, 1942, in Grafton, Virginia, to the late John Elson Evans and Mable Edmonia Perrin‑Evans.
Shack was a proud graduate of James Weldon Johnson School. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Army. After his military service, he built a long and dedicated career as a truck driver with New England Motor Freight Company, where he worked faithfully until his retirement.
He was united in marriage to the late Barbara Jean Pair‑Evans, with whom he shared many years of love, partnership, and family.
Shack was preceded in death by his siblings: Harvey A. Evans, Mable Bernice Tyson‑Fields, Alice L. Evans, and William “Wildcat” Evans.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories his children: John W. Evans, Jr., Newport News, VA, Dale Darrell Evans (Delphine), Hampton, VA; Timothy A. Evans (Carol), Newport News, VA, Gwen Pair‑Costes (Martin), Baltimore, MD, Michael Evans, Baltimore, MD, and Juan “Jay” Evans (Sabrina), Jacksonville, FL
He is also survived by his grandchildren and great‑grandchildren; his sisters Beaulah Marshall and Dorthy Davis, both of Yorktown, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever remember his kindness, humor, and unwavering love.
Shack will be remembered as a hardworking man who loved deeply, lived boldly, and touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
