Jimmie Lee Coats completed his earthly journey and peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Riverside Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.
Jimmie was born on August 8,1939 in New Bern, NC to the late Atlee and Helen Coats. He was educated in the Pitt County Public School System in Ayden, North Carolina.
Jimmie worked as a welder and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company after 31 years. He also worked for the City of Hampton School System as a janitor and the Peninsula Food Bank as a driver.
Jimmie joined and served at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church now Greater Bethlehem Christian Assembly for 40 years. He had a great love for his church as he served in many capacities; driver of the church van, a devoted usher, cook, senior choir, church softball team and his very special love, the men’s chorus.
Jimmie was an avid fisherman, a member of the LL Hunting Club, great bowler, loved watching tennis, track and was an all-around sports person. He was a body builder; 1st place in the Moore Pettaway Hobson Classic in 2001. He was a die-hard fan of the Colts Football Team.
Jimmie in his later years enjoyed the comfort of watching his great grandchildren playing in front of him or holding them in his arms. He loved and lived life to the fullest. He cherished his large family. He was a wonderful and great man, whom all will miss very much. His job is done, and he has earned his wings.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, Patricia, daughter Stephanie Brown, and all his siblings, Ethel, Blanch, Archie, James, and Odell.
Jimmie leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of twenty years, Dorothy Coats, daughters, Lisa, Paula, Karen, Wanda, sons, Daryl, Eric, Gary Brown and stepson, Elton Porter, Jr., all of Hampton, Virginia. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, five great- great grands and a host of nieces, nephews, and a very close hunting and church friend Joe, fishing buddy, Young and many other friends too many to name. He had a very close relationship with Dexter Porter, his step grandson who called him “Olde Man”.

Viewing for Mr. Coats will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2021 at C.C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc.
Services for Mr. Coats are scheduled for noon Friday, March 26, 2021 at Fountain of Living Waters, 1457 Todds Lane, Hampton, Virginia 23666.
Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
